"Bette Davis Eyes"는 미국의 뮤지션 Kim Carnes의 6번 째 앨범 <Mistaken Identity>의 수록곡으로 Donna Weiss가 작사하고 Jackie DeShannon이 작곡했으며, Val Garay가 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

 

빌보드 HOT100에서 비연속으로 9주동안 1위를 차지했으며(5주 연속 1위 후, 1주를 건너뛰고 다시 4주 연속으로 1위를 차지했다), 캐나다에서도 무려 12주동안 1위를 차지했으며, 호주, 프랑스, 독일, 스페인, 핀란드, 노르웨이, 남아공, 스위스등에서 1위를 차지했으며, 영국, 뉴질랜드, 아일랜드, 오스트리아, 벨기에, 스웨덴등에서 TOP10에 들며 전세계적으로 크게 사랑받았다.

 

 

상업적인 대성공과 더불어 1982년 제 25회 Grammy Awards에서 Song of the Year(올해의 노래)와 Record of the Year(올해의 레코드) 두 개 부문을 수상하는 영예도 함께 가져갈 수 있었다.

 

 

이 곡은 원래 1974년 Donna Weiss와 Jackie DeShannon이 함께 작곡한 곡으로, 곡이 만들어진 같은해에 Jackie DeShannon이 그녀의 앨범 <New Arrangement>에 R&B lite 스타일로 녹음한 버전을 수록한 것이 첫 번째 녹음이었다. 하지만 그리 큰 반향은 일으키지 못했고....

 

 

그리고 시간이 지나 1981년 프로듀서인 Val Garay가 완전히 다른 곡으로 느껴질 정도로 편곡된 버전을 만듦으로써 전세계적으로 메가히트를 기록하게 되는데, 당시의 분위기에 따라 신디사이져를 적극 활용하여 굉장히 파워풀한 사운드로 탈바꿈시켰고, 이는 신의 한수가 되었다.

 

 

뮤직비디오는 호주 출신 Russell Mulcahy가 감독하였는데, 리듬에 맞춰 반복적으로 댄서들이 따귀를 때리는 시늉을 하는 것과 모두 같이 양손으로 바닥을 탕탕 내려치는 시늉을 하는 안무들이 크게 시선을 끌기도 했다.

 

 

이 곡을 작곡한 Jackie DeShannon는 영화 <Now Voyager>를 본 후 미국의 여배우 Bette Davis로 부터 영감을 맏아 이 곡을 만들었다고 전해지는데, 1981년 Kim Carnes의 버전이 메가 히트를 쳤을 때 이미 73세의 고령이었던 Bette Davis는 Kim Carnes & Donna Weiss & Jackie DeShannon 세 사람 모두에게 그녀를 "a part of modern times"(현대의 일부)로 만들어 준 데 감사한다는 내용의 편지를 썼다. 그리고 이제는 자신의 손자가 본인이 유명한 배우였다는 것을 믿고 본인을 "looked up to her"(존경한다)는 기쁜 소식까지 전했다.
