"Shape of You"는 영국의 싱어송라이터 Ed Sheeran의 세 번째 정규 앨범 <÷>의 수록곡으로 Ed Sheeran & Johnny McDaid & Kandi Burruss & Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs & Steve Mac & Tameka Cottle가 만들었고, Ed Sheeran & Steve Mac가 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

 

앨범의 더블 리드 싱글 중 하나로 발매된 이 곡은 빌보드 HOT100에서 무려 12주 간이나 1위를 차지했고(비연속), 영국, 호주, 캐나다, 뉴질랜드, 오스트리아, 벨기에, 불가리아, 콜럼비아, 크로아티아, 체코, 덴마크, 핀란드, 프랑스, 독일, 그리스, 헝가리, 아일랜드, 이스라엘, 이탈리아, 라트비아, 룩셈부르크, 네덜란드, 노르웨이, 필리핀, 폴란드, 포르투갈, 러시아, 스코틀랜드, 슬로바키아, 슬로베니아, 스웨덴, 우크라이나등 34개국에서 1위를 차지하며 전세계적으로 대성공 하였다.

 

이러한 전세계적인 음악차트의 석권으로 이 곡은 2017년 또한 미국에 기반을 둔 세계 최대의 스트리밍 서비스 Spotify에서 20억 스트리밍을 달성한 첫 번째 노래가 되었고, 2019년에는 27억 스트리밍을넘어서며 Spotify 역대 최대 스트리밍 곡이 되었다.

 

또한 유튜브에서는 뮤직비디오가 무려 58억뷰를 넘어서며 역대 3위를 기록했으며, 역대 2위를 노리고 있기도 하다.

 

2019년에는 미국에서는 IRAA인증 1,000만 유닛이상을 판매하여 다이아몬드 인증을 받았으며, 월드와이드 세일즈로 등가 스트리밍 합산 4,150만 유닛 판매를 기록하며 상업적으로 그야말로 메가 히트를 기록했다.

 

 

상업적 성공과 더불어 이 곡은 2018 Brit Awards에서 <British Single of the Year>와 <British Video of the Year>에 노미네이트 되었고, 제60회 Grammy Award에서 <Best Pop Solo Performance>부문을 수상하는등 수상의 영예도 함께 가져갈 수 있었는데, 2021년 빌보드지는 "Shape of You"를 "most successful song of all-time"(역사상 가장 성공한 노래)에서 10위에 선정하기도 했다.

 

 

사실 이 곡은 표절 의혹 논란이 있기도 했었는데, 곡의 발매 직후 TLC의 대히트곡 "No Scrubs"를 표절했다는 의혹이었는데, 의혹이 일자 발빠르게 합의하여 공동저작자로 추가했다는 의혹이 있었지만, 사실은 의혹과 다르게 사전에 원곡자에게 샘플링 사실을 미리 고지하고 합법적으로 샘플링이 이루어 진것 이었다.

 

"No Scrubs"의 공동 작곡가인 Kandi Burruss는 에드 시런 측으로부터 자신의 곡을 샘플링했다는 연락을 받았고, 양측 변호사는 로열티 배분에 대한 대화를 진행했는데, "Shape Of You"가 발표되었을 시점에는 아직 로열티 배분에 대한 디테일한 협의가 마무리 되지 않은 상태였으나, 발표 후에는 애초에 원곡자가 원했던 금액보다 훌씬 더 많은 로열티를 받을 수 있었기에 매우 흡족해 했다고 전해진다.
