"All by Myself"는 미국의 싱어송라이터 Eric Carmen의 셀프 타이틀 데뷔앨범 <Eric Carmen>의 수록곡으로

Eric Carmen가 만들고, Jimmy Ienner가 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

빌보드 HOT100에서 2위까지 올랐고, 캐나다, 호주, 이탈리아, 네덜란드, 뉴질랜드, 남아공등에서 TOP10에 들며 많은 사랑을 받았다.

 

 

이 곡은 기본 코드를 Sergei Rachmaninoff(세르게이 라흐마니노프)의 Piano Concerto No.2 in C minor, Opus 18(피아노 협주곡 2번 C단조 18) second movement (Adagio sostenuto)(2악장)을 기초로 만들었기에 Sergei Rachmaninoff의 저작권을 관리하는 회사에 12%의 로열티를 주는것과 동시에 Composer에도 그의 이름을 같이 이름을 올렸다.

 

 

Eric Carmen는 Songfacts와의 인터뷰에서 최초에 곡의 솔로 부분인 4개의 소절을 만들었고, 두 달에 걸쳐 interlude(막간)을 완성했다고 한다. 그는 이것을 노래에 넣어야 했는데, 1949년작 영국영화 <Brief Encounter>(한국 개봉명 : 밀회)에 배경음악으로 사용되어 유명해진 Sergei Rachmaninoff의 피아노 협주곡 2번을 듣고는 그 중에서 2악장의 멜로디를 수정하여 쓰게된다.

 

 

 

Sergei Rachmaninoff의 음악은 그 당시 미국에서 public domain(퍼블릭 도메인)이었기 때문에 Eric Carmen은 저작권에서 자유로울거라 생각했지만, 해당 피아노 협주곡은 미국 밖에서는 여전히 저작권의 보호를 받고 있었고, 앨범이 발매된 후 Sergei Rachmaninoff의 저작권을 관리하는 회사로부터 연락을 받고 "All by Myself"로 벌어들인 수익의 12%를 로열티로 지급하였다.

 

 

이 후 1996년 캐나다의 세계 3대 디바중 한명인 Celine Dion가 그녀의 4번 째 앨범 <Falling into You>에 커버 버전을 수록하여 전세계적으로 메가 히트를 기록하게도 했다.
