"Sacrifice"는 영국의 싱어송라이터인 Elton John의 1989년 앨범 <Sleeping with the Past>에 수록된 곡으로 에서 Elton John & Bernie Taupin이 함께 만들었고 Chris Thomas이 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

1989년 10월 앨범의 두 번째 싱글로 발매되어, 유로 Hot 100, 영국, 프랑스 차트에서 1위를 차지하였고, 빌보드 Adult Contemporary 3위를 기록하였으며, 벨기에, 이일랜드, 네덜란드, 노르웨이등에서 TOP 5에 들며 많은 사랑을 받았다.

 

 

 

Elton John의 명성에 비하면 좀 의외이긴 한데, 이 곡이 1990년에 UK차트에서 1위를 차지하면서 모국에서의 첫 번째 싱글차트 1위를 차지한 곡이 되었고, 프랑스에서도 1위를 차지한 그의 첫 번째 곡이 된다.

 

 

이 곡의 비디오는 Alek Keshishian이 감독했으며 슈퍼모델이었던 Yasmeen Ghauri와 싱어송라이터 Chris Isaak가 출연했다. 뮤직비디오는 가사의 내용을 그대로 따라가는데, 결혼하여 아이(딸)를 가진 후 관계에 문제가 생겨 각자의 길을 가게되고 홀로 딸을 키우게 되는 남자의 모습을 그려냈다.

 

 

이 곡은 Aretha Franklin(아레사 프랭클린)의 노래 "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man"에서 영감을 얻었다고 하는데, 전형적인 사랑 노래가 아니라, 관계의 상실에 대해 이야기 하는 곡으로, Elton John & Bernie Taupin 모두 너무나도 아끼고 좋아하는 곡이라고 한다.

 

 

 

이 곡은 일시적인 빅히트에 그치지않고 꾸준히 사람들의 사랑을 받으면서 성공으로 인해 Elton John은 이 곡이 발매된 후 30여년 동안 가는곳마다 Request 1순위로 이 곡을 불러오고 있다.
