"By Your Side"는 영국 밴드 Sade의 다섯 번째 스튜디오 앨범 <Lovers Rock>의 수록곡으로 Sade가 작곡하고 Sade와 Mike Pela가 함께 프로듀싱하였다.

 

이 앨범은 1992년 이후로 무려 8년만에 발매된 것이었는데, 밴드구성원 모두는 그 오랜시간 동안 대중에게서 서서히 잊혀져 가며 파파라치로부터 사진한 장 찍힌적이 없을 정도였다는 밴드의 얼굴 Sade Adu를 언급하며 이 앨범을 작업하면서 매우 조심스러웠었다고 당시를 회상했다.

 

 

이 곡은 2000년 10월 미국에서, 한달 후인 2000년 11월 영국에서 본 앨범의 리드 싱글로 발매되었고, 챠트에서 엄청난 각광을 받지는 못했지만 전세계적으로 꾸준히 많은 사랑을 받았고, 2001년 제44회 그래미 어워드에서 Best Female Pop Vocal Performance 에 노미네이트 되기도 했으며, 2002년 VH1에서 선정한 The Greatest Love Song 에서 48위로 선정되기도 했다.

 

이 싱글은 평단에서 수많은 평론가들로부터 극찬을 받았는데,

 

'Albumism'의 편집장 Justin Chadwick은 "stands as one of the most endearing anthems of unconditional love to emerge in the 21st century thus far"(21세기에 들어 지금껏 등장한 가장 사랑스러운 맹목적인 사랑의 찬가 중 하나)라고 극찬했고,

*Sade(/ʃɑːˈdeɪ/ shah-DAY/ 샤데이)라는 특이한 발음을 가진 이 영국 밴드는 리드 싱어인 Sade Adu의 이름을 따서 1982년 런던에서 결성되었다.
