"Starman"은1972년 발매된 David Bowie 의 정규 5집 앨범 <The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars>의 4번 트랙으로 수록된 곡으로, 밝고 긍정적인 메세지를 가진 David Bowie 최고의 명곡 중 하나로 꼽힌다.

 

 

David Bowie가 만들고, David Bowie & Ken Scott이 공동 으로 프로듀싱한 이곡은 1972년 2월 4일 런던의 Trident Studios에서 기타리스트 Mick Ronson, 베이시스트 Trevor Bolder 및 드러머 Mick Woodmansey로 구성된 자신의 세션 밴드와 함께 이 노래를 녹음했다. (자신의 세션 밴드에게는 "Spiders from Mars"라고 이름 붙인다.)

 

 

 

원래 보위는 이 곡을 작곡할 생각이 없었다고 하는데, Ziggy Stardust 앨범 작업이 거의 끝나갈 때 쯤 만들어졌는데, RCA 레코드의 Dennis Kats가 완성된 앨범을 들어보고 흥행할만한 싱글이 필요하다고 해서 작곡되었다. 원래 Starman 대신 들어갈 곡은 Chuck Berry의 Round and Round의 커버 버전이었다.

 

 

2015년 개봉한 Ridley Scott감독의 영화 <The Martian>에 수록되기도 했다. 주인공 마크 와트니의 구출을 위해서 미국과 중국의 모두가 협력하는 장면에 삽입됐는데, 밝은 화면에 희망을 보여주는 분위기와 함께 David Bowie의 낙천적인 사운드까지 입혀져 이 영화를 보고난 후 David Bowie를 접하게 되는 사람들이 많아지기도 했다.

 

가사는 화성에서온 우주인인 Ziggy Stardust 가 지구에서 Rock Star가 되었지만, 5년 후 지구가 멸망할 것을 알게 되며 자신이 사랑하는 지구를 구하기 위해 Starman이라는 메시아적 존재가 도와줄 것이라는 구원의 메시지를 라디오를 통해 지구의 젊은이들에게 설파하는 내용으로 되어 있다.
