세기말에 해성처럼 등장하여 뉴밀레니엄을 맞이한 전세계인의 슈퍼스타로 등극한 싱글 소녀 가수 Britney Spears는 데뷔 앨범 <...Baby One More Time>에 수록되어 두 번째로 발매된 싱글로 빌보드 HOT 100에서 21위까 오르고, UK 차트에서 3위까지 오르며 많은 사랑을 받았다.

 

 

개인적으로는 들어도 들어도 물리지 않고, 너무 귀를 자극하지 않으면서, 흥겹지만 동시에 평화로운 분위기의 이 곡을 Britney Spears의 최고의 곡으로 치고싶다.

 

 

Britney Spears의 성공의 여러가지 이유들 중에 하나가 그녀의 독특한 창법 때문인데, 그녀의 유년시절 참가했던 Star Search나 MickyMouse Club등의 자료를 보면 알 수 있듯이 그녀는 원래 힘있고 묵직한 디바형 창법을 구사했었다.

 

하지만, JIVE RECORD와 계약을 한 후, 레이블측에서 요구한 창법으로 바꾸게 되는데, 고양이와 같은 나른한 창법으로 고치면서 섹시 스타로 발돋움할 수 있었다. 다만 이 창법은 자연스럽지 못하고 작위적으로 내는 창법인 이유로 음폭과 성량이 한없이 줄어들게 되는 단점이 있기에 Live에는 치명적으로 작용한다. 그걸 잘 알고 있는 본인과 레이블은 그녀의 활동을 라이브 공연위주 보다는 화려한 퍼포먼스 위주로 집중하게 하였다.

 

17세 고등학생 + 섹시컨셉 + 도발적 이미지 + 건강미로 팬들이 원하는 요소들을 모두 다 가지고 있었던 것에 더해서 결정적으로 방점을 찍었던 것이 바로 "마마걸" 의 착한 소녀 이미지 였는데, 데뷔 초부터 초절정기 시절에도 범접하기 어려운 절정의 미녀라기 보다는 사랑스러운 이웃집 소녀같은 친근한 외모로 유명했던 그녀는 이런 "The girl next door"의 이미지로 너무나 사랑스러우면서도 바른 생활 소녀라는 친근한 이미지를 앞세워 남녀노소 모두의 사랑을 받으며, 가수임에도 불구하고 이례적으로 'American Sweetheart'라는 수식어를 최초로 얻기도 했다.

 

 

한때 30주년 콘서트 때문에 함께 공연한 적이 있던 Michael Jackson도 Britney Spears를 겪어보고는 "매우 예의 바르고 사랑스러운 성격"이라 발언한 적이 있으며, 함께 작업했던 동료 연예인들로부터 인성에 있어서 잡음이 나온적이 단 한번도 없을 만큼 실제로도 인간적으로는 매우 순수하고 예의바른 사랑스러운 여인임에는 틀림이 없는 듯 하다.

 

 

문제는 그렇기에, 주변에 똥파리들이 쉽게 꼬일 수 있는 환경인데, 강단있게 주변의 정래해주는 제대로 된 매니저만 있었더라도 후에 벌어질 그녀를 괴롭히는 많은 일들로 그녀가 망가지지 않았을 텐데라는 아쉬움이 크다.
